Auckland

Thursday, July 19

After such a stressful day on Wednesday, we subconsciously elected to sleep to 10:30am. Stephen blames the change in timezones, since it was actually only 8:30 in Australia. When the hotel called at 11 asking if we were checking out, we decided we should probably get going. We said goodbye to our spartan hotel room and walked to the bus stop. No issues this time, we had a scenic drive downtown and made it to our next hotel with no problems.

As it was lunch time, we wandered around the city a bit and found the most incredible food court ever. There were more than a dozen Asian food restaurants covering Vietnamese, Korean, Malaysian, Indian, Japanese, and more. It was as if I had died and gone to heaven. After making a full loop to see all the options, we settled on a a-la-carte sushi restaurant where you grabbed a pair of tongs (it took us a minute to figure this out), and proceeded down the line that was constantly being replenished with freshly made sushi. They had tofu and vegetable sushi galore (and fried stuff for Stephen). And it was awesome!

Here's what our lunch looked like:

Technically, that's what it looked like after the first pass. I went back for a second round it was so good. Stephen got a roll to go (chicken, avocado, rice, and teriyaki sauce wrapped in a fried scallion pancake). Yum.

After lunch we decided to work off some of the calories with another stroll through the city. Unfortunately we used up the camera battery on the food and have none of the city. We'll fix that when we return to Auckland in a few days.

It wouldn't be a true vacation if I didn't get sick at least once, and it would appear today was the day. This meant we spent the rest of the day in the hotel curled up watching movies. Our triple feature included Diary of Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules, Transformers 3: Dark Side of the Moon, and Big Momma: Like Father Like Son. By 1am we were movied out and headed to bed. Tomorrow we begin our driving adventure!
